David Chase Says

According to Matthew Weiner, formerly a writer on The Sopranos, now the creator of Mad Men, David Chase's mantra to those on staff was, "Reject your first three ideas."

I got this from a Creative Screenwriting Podcast (avail on iTunes).

Bleeding Love

I had an epiphany recently that the reason I dig Fox's "So You Think You Can Dance" as much as I do, is because dance takes three things I love - art, music, and athletics - and combines them into one package. I'm accompanying this revelation with this specific dance because the choreography shares a theme with the script Tim and I are working on right now "This World Was Made for Ending" and it is also personally relevant to me.

Dying Cities

dyingcity_09.jpg
If you don't know, Tim and I were born in Amherst, Ohio which is a small town about 35 miles west of Cleveland. In this Forbes magazine article about dying cities in America, four of the top ten cities listed are within the state of Ohio (Cleveland, Akron, Youngstown, and Dayton). This is a sad result of a lot of problems, namely the loss of manufacturing jobs and the inability of the cities to find new industry, but it's something you can feel when visiting the area. It's upsetting to see this happen to a place that, despite its flaws, shaped me and continues to be home to many people I know and love.

One day down the line my hope is that I will be fortunate enough to be able to donate time and money to trying to figure out a way to help rebuild the area. You won't see us blowing up Cleveland in any of our scripts.
